Heroes and Legends featuring the Astronaut Hall of Fame

In the twentieth century, the United States began its journey into outer space. The country was quick to capitalize on the new frontier through a series of daring and groundbreaking space missions. Some of these early adventures are so obscure that only a handful of people have ever heard about them. These are the Heroes and Legends Featuring the Astronaut Hall of Fame located in Space Commerce Way, Merritt Island, FL 32953.

The Florida Astronaut Hall of Fame is located at Merritt Island’s Canaveral National Seashore.

The Astronaut Hall of Fame Foundation is dedicated to perpetuating the memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the pursuit of human space exploration. We celebrate the extraordinary human beings who made it possible by recognizing the achievements of our fallen heroes and the lives they touched. In 2006, the Astro Tourism Society of Florida was founded by a group of amateur space enthusiasts. The Astro Tourism Society of Florida is an organization dedicated to promoting the human space flight experience, by creating and running events centered around the astronaut and space tourism communities of Florida. The Astro Tourism Society of Florida is a member of the Astronaut Hall of Fame Foundation.

Our first astronaut hall of fame was opened in 2006, and it featured the stories of Alan Shepard and Gus Grissom.

Alan Shepard was the first American to enter outer space, aboard the Freedom 7 Mercury capsule. He was followed into space by Gus Grissom, who piloted the identical Mercury spacecraft, “Gemini 6.” The two pioneers were selected by NASA in 1959, to conduct the nation’s first manned space flight. They were chosen in part because they were the only two astronauts to have been a part of Project Mercury. In addition to these two famous astronauts, the Florida Astronaut Hall of Fame included the stories of John Glenn and Neil Armstrong. John Glenn became the first American to orbit the earth in 1962 and flew in space four more times. Neil Armstrong became the first human to walk on the moon in 1969, and he was the chief commander of the Apollo 11 mission.

We added John Glenn and Neil Armstrong to our hall of fame shortly after.

John Glenn was a former Navy pilot who left his mark on history in many ways. He was the first American to orbit the earth in 1962, and he was the first American to orbit the earth in style, aboard the Friendship 7 Mercury spacecraft. He was also the first American to orbit the earth in a single-engine aircraft and the first to orbit the earth in an experimental rocket-plane. He was chosen by NASA in 1959 to be one of the original seven astronauts, and he served as a member of the NASA astronaut team from 1962-98. He was the recipient of many awards and honors, including the Congressional Space Medal of Honor, the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
